DIY Starter Set

Here are my most used tools and great place to start building your own collection. I have slowly built my tool collection on an as need basis. I prefer Ridgid tools when the option is available because they have a lifetime warranty if you register them. DeWalt tools are also powerful and built to last. Both brands have been well worth the investment for me as I use them often, but of course, please decide what is best for you!

DeWalt 12” Miter Saw

I use this saw for every. single. project. It has been a great first miter saw for my DIY's. DeWalt offers other fancy options on their miter saws, but I bought this saw in 2021 and it has met all of my needs. It is well built and made to last. The blade cuts up to 55 degrees and the blade arm also tilts to a 45-degree angle. The angles are easy to change, you squeeze the lever and slide the knob left and right. Part of the fence removes for compound cuts and those angles are adjusted with another knob. This saw is my go-to cutting option. The grip is comfortable and has a button on it to engage the blade. There is a port on the back of the saw for dust collection. I find the blade is easy to change, and there is a safety shield around the blade. There are screw holes on the feet to secure it to a workshop table if needed. I’ve used this saw to make/install picture frames, baseboards, 1/4 round, wainscoting and more!

Ridgid Brad Nailer

This cordless brad nailer has been wonderful! I bought this nail gun in 2021 and constantly use it. It is powerful and drives a clean nail. It takes and 18-gauge nail of various lengths. The nails are easy to add in the spring-loaded compartment that you can see open in the picture. There is a light that comes on when you press the tip into the wood. I do not know the exact time, but the battery life does not impact my ability to work. However, as a general rule of thumb, I always have an extra battery charging. This tool was intimidating at first, but I was quickly able to feel confident with the safety features. The grip is comfortable and gives me a secure hold. Also, a nail will not release without the tip being properly depressed on a flat surface. That said, I always go the extra mile and remove the battery when it’s not in use for extra safety. Ridgid tools have a lifetime warranty if you register them. I do not have direct experience replacing tools with Ridgid. My brother, an esteemed woodworker, had to replace a tool and had excellent experience with their customer service.

DeWalt Orbital Sander

Talk about a tool that does all the work for me! With 7 different speed settings, I am able to gently glide this sander around the wood. There are holes in the sandpaper and a port to hook up a shop vac for easy dust collection. What a different the shop vac makes! I immediately notice if I’ve forgotten to turn on the vacuum. The one draw back is that I must have a backup battery charging. Ideally I would have 3 batteries in rotation for maximum work time, especially if I have the sander on max speed. Keeping a battery charged is a small price to pay for the sanding power and freedom from a cord.
